When Eric contacted me about a destination proposal he was planning in New York City I was super excited, since I love hiding and playing paparazzi to capture that once in a lifetime reaction when the ring comes out. Eric and Priscilla were travelling to NYC for the holidays from Hawaii where they live (it’ll be tough to beat a honeymoon destination for them!) but their relationship started here.
I offered Eric some advice as to choosing a location in New York City for a proposal, however his mind was set on Washington Square Park since it had sentimental meaning to him and Priscilla. On one side, it made me happy that a specific place would bring back memories for them and bring out even more emotions. On the other, it made me slightly worried because Washington Square Park can get very crowded at times, and composing a great image, from a flattering angle, with no one walking by at that split second when Priscilla would see the ring was certainly a challenge, but don’t we all love a challenge?
To shift the chances more in our favor, some planning was required. As I always do when working with guys planning their proposals, I sent over Eric a map with a drawn out path to take, place to stand, and direction to face. I knew I would be there much earlier and do as much crowd control as I could as I knew they would be getting closer, but just in case we had a backup plan ready as well. The goal was to get the arch in Washington Square Park in the background, and being a holiday themed proposal and engagement session the day after Christmas, there was also a beautiful Christmas tree in the background I tried my best to frame and include in a few photos as well.
Well, thanks to some well thought out planning I am thrilled to show the results and say everything went exactly as planned, if not better! Eric used his body language to position Priscilla in the perfect spot, stayed down on his knee just long enough, and most important of all, I think the photos speak for themselves when you see Priscilla’s priceless reaction.
Right after Eric proposed we did a quick engagement session around Washington Square Park and some more photos on Washington Mews, a nearby cobblestone street that is incredibly picturesque.
